A Crack Is a Report, Not an Accident

Stone does not crack for no reason and it very rarely cracks where it is strong. Nearly every crack we are called to in Riverside starts at one of three places: the corner of a sink cutout, the corner of a cooktop cutout, or a narrow bridge of stone between a cutout and the front edge.

Those are the weak points by geometry. A cutout removes material from the middle of a slab and leaves inside corners, and an inside corner concentrates stress the way a notch in a piece of glass does. Whatever load the run is carrying finds that corner first.

So the first job is not filling the crack. It is working out what put the load there.

Why It Usually Starts Underneath

In a lot of Riverside housing the answer is the cabinet run. Slab-on-grade construction across the older tract areas has had decades to settle, and a slab that has moved a quarter inch takes the cabinets with it. The stone above stays rigid, because stone does not flex, so it ends up bridging a dip and taking a bending load it was never meant to carry.

Other causes we see regularly: an undermount sink whose adhesive has released, so a full sink of water is now hanging off the stone at the cutout. A dishwasher bracket screwed too tight into the underside. A cooktop cutout with no supporting rail across the front. And occasionally a slab that was cut with a square inside corner rather than a radiused one, which is a fabrication shortcut that shows up years later.

The Repair Sequence

We level the run first. That means shimming and re-setting cabinets where they have dropped, and adding support under the cutout where there is none. This is the step that gets skipped by anyone in a hurry, and it is the reason a repaired crack reopens.

Then the crack itself. It gets opened slightly along its length so there is something for the fill to key into, cleaned out, and vacuumed. If the crack is still running we drill a small stop hole at the leading tip, which blunts the point where stress concentrates and keeps it from travelling further.

The fill is color-matched epoxy, worked into the full depth rather than skimmed across the top, then cured and polished flat.

Reinforcement From Below

On a cutout crack we reinforce underneath as well, because the fill alone is cosmetic. That means routing a channel into the underside across the crack and bedding either a steel flat bar or fibreglass rodding into it with epoxy. It is invisible from above and it carries the tension the stone can no longer carry on its own.

Where a front rail is missing under a cooktop cutout, we add one. Where a sink has dropped, it gets re-hung on proper brackets before anything else happens.

When We Say the Piece Is Finished

We will tell you to replace that piece when a cutout has cracked through in more than one direction, when the crack has already run out to the front edge and to the back, when a mitered edge has delaminated along its length, or when the substrate itself is failing rather than just settled.

We will also say it when the honest cost of doing the reinforcement properly approaches the cost of a new piece of stone. At that point you are buying a compromised counter for close to the price of a sound one, and that is a bad deal even though it is more work for us.

When it does come to replacement, it is normally that one section, templated to the existing run, not the whole kitchen. Be aware that a slab bought today will not match a slab bought eight years ago exactly, even in the same named material, because natural stone varies by block and engineered stone changes by batch. We would rather you hear that before ordering.

Do Not Keep Loading It

If a crack has opened or lengthened in the last day or two, stop putting weight on that section, take anything heavy off it, and do not let a full sink hang from a cutout that is already cracked. Call (951) 228-9199 and send a photo along the length of the crack.
