Back-to-school time brings opportunities

Journal Staff Report
The beginning of a new school year means opportunities and challenges, not only for schoolchildren, but for elected officials, education leaders, parents, and teachers, said state Sen. Tom Saxhaug, DFL-Grand Rapids.
“For as long as I can remember, our state has been known nationwide for our excellent public schools,” Saxhaug said. “That means we not only have students that get good grades and test well, we also have teachers, administrators and parents committed to giving the best to our children and getting the best in return.”

School safety tips

The beginning of school is right around the corner and Koochiching County Sheriff Brian Youso is advising motorists to drive with caution.
Youso wants to remind drivers to watch for buses and children. If the flashing lights are on, drivers must stop. Passing a bus with its stop arm out is a gross misdemeanor, Youso said.
Parents should ensure that their children understand the route to the bus stop or to school if they walk. Youso suggests that parents practice walking the route with their children.

Summer’s best read book

It sits on the counter at every bait shop in the state. You see it sticking out of back pockets and tackle boxes. Children who look at summer as three months of freedom from books take it out in a booth at McDonalds and study it. If it weren’t free it would be Minnesota’s perennially best selling summer book. Published by the Department of Natural Resources, it is Minnesota Fishing, the annual guide to the state’s angling regulations. It is also a great literacy tool. Here are some ways you can use the 2008 guide.
