Maria Porter takes 27th; Travis Phillipe takes 55th place

Travis Phillipe and Maria Porter completed their play at the State Boys and Girls Golf Tournament on Thursday and Friday at the Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan.
Both Bronco golfers were playing as individuals in the tournament.
Porter fired a 87 and 95 for a 182 two-round total, which put her in 27th place overall in the field of 88 golfers.
"Maria played pretty well on Thursday posting the 87, her putting was off as she 4 putted once and had three or four 3 putts also,” said Coach Bill Mason. “If the putter was working a little better, she could of been in the lower 80's.”
On Friday, the girls tee times were pushed back an hour or so when the boys didn’t finish their rounds due to weather delays.
"Friday was one of the most difficult wind days I've seen when playing golf," said Mason. “The winds must have been 40-50 miles per hour for most of the day, which made scoring much higher than the scores of Thursday."
Sarah Roering of Minnewaska was the meet medalist recording rounds of 77 and 80 for a 157 two-day total and the state title. Minnewaska also won the girls team title for the fourth straight season, posting 305 and 338 for a 643 total.
"Maria had a very successful season and golf career,” noted Mason. “She's qualified for state two times and has been one of the top golfers in our sections the past three years. She's a very nice young lady and we wish her all the best in her future."
Travis Phillipe was going into the state tournament with a lot of confidence and to place high in the field as the section 7AA co-champion. The first round for Phillipe was Thursday afternoon, as the boys played after the girls.
The weather continued to deteriorate, and the boys were only able to get in around 9 or 10 holes before play was suspended, according to Mason.
Phillipe posted a 41 on his first nine holes, then had to come back the next morning and play his second nine holes for the completion of his first round. He finished with a 41 for a decent round of 81, said Mason.
"The boys were very unfortunate as they had to play 27 holes on Friday in some of the toughest wind conditions I've ever seen," Mason said. “Hole No. 18 for the morning rounds, the boys had to finish up on, had numerous balls blow off the green from the wind.”
Phillipe's second round was an 89, which gave him a two-day total of 170, which put him in 55th place overall.
The individual champion came out of section 7AA, with Robert Bell of Pierz claiming the state title posting rounds of 77 and 74 for a 151 total. Orono came out with the team championship with the fifth man coming into play as they tied Detroit Lakes at 639, and the tie breaker being the fifth score.
Phillipe should be proud of his season, said Mason. He played very well for the Broncos and had his best rounds when they counted the most at the section tournament, he said.
“Any time you make the state tournament you should be proud, as well as the school and golf program being pleased they were represented by such fine young student athletes in Travis and Maria,” Mason concluded.
