The summer is going by rapidly. The library continues to purchase materials for our Vigilance collection.
We have a fairly extensive collection of documentaries as well as books on tape. We also have a small collection of reference materials that might help answer questions you might have on health care for the whole person including the PDR for Herbal Medicines. We also have a reference series on emerging industries including biotechnology and environmental resources. And finally we have a reference series on political corruption in America and a series on children’s issues worldwide. These items can’t be checked out but provide a basic introduction and place to start in researching.
But the most exciting news for the summer is the acquisition of a video projector, DVD/VCR player, TVs and gaming equipment. This fall we’ll start a monthly showing of a documentary with a discussion following. The number of excellent documentary films is increasing and we have a growing collection. Stay tuned for more details. The library purchased the equipment as part of the donation we received over a year ago. The donor wanted the library to be attractive to teenagers and children. The library decided that offering gaming at the library was a good way to attract teenagers and get them in the door where we can show them what else we have and maybe entice them to take a book or two now and then.
So, to accomplish the goal of being attractive to teens, the library is now hosting twice monthly gaming nights for teens in grade 7 and above. Teens are welcome to come and try their hand at a variety of games, including Rock Band and Guitar Hero as well as Dance Dance Revolution. The library has also secured a Wii and offers Super Mario Smash, Wii Play, Wii Sports and a few other games. Stop into the library and pick up a bookmark, available in the teen section of the library, with the dates for the rest of 2008.
Beginning in September, we will also offer open gaming once a month. Anyone with children in grades 6 and below accompanied by an adult will be able to stop in and try the games. More details will be available at the end of the month as we finish up summer reading and then schedule for fall.
Teen summer reading continues through Aug. 22. Be sure to have all bookmarks for books read turned in by then as the drawing will be held on Monday, Aug. 25 before the library opens.
Just a few weeks remain to get Cracker: the best dog in Vietnam by Cynthia Kadohata read. Plenty of copies are available for checkout at both the main desk upstairs in the library or down in the junior room. Discussion of the summer 2008 Borderland Reads title will occur Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. Join us for a discussion of this terrific story. Discussion is open to anyone and refreshments will be provided.
