Summer may be wrapping up for students but that means reading faster to get in plenty of great books before heading back to school. Here are a few late summer titles to keep your child reading.

Vigilance collection is growing

The summer is going by rapidly. The library continues to purchase materials for our Vigilance collection.

Enjoy the lazy days of summer

I hope everyone has been able to get out and enjoy the summer weather we’ve been having. Grab a book and head down to the beach and enjoy the lazy days of summer. Here are a few light reads.

Summer Reading winding down

Summer Reading continues but has begun to wind down.
Next Thursday, July 31, is the last day to turn in hours to qualify for a free summer reading t-shirt. Ten hours of reading and listening are needed to get a t-shirt. So, if your child hasn’t quite got their reading done, now would be a good time to encourage them to get back to it so they can qualify for a t-shirt. Turn in hours read, for books through the end of August.

Gardening books may help this summer

I don’t know if the weather we are having this summer can be attributed to climate change but I do know I am challenged to get my garden to grow. The Vigilance collection of the library has a number of new gardening and farming books that might help. “The Self-Sustaining Garden: a guide to matrix planting” by Peter Thompson explores the notion that by combining plants into self-governing communities you have less work to do. Although the book is designed for climates that only get to about minus 13 in the winter, some of the ideas are applicable to our area.

Borderland Read’s Cracker available

The weather is wild and seems to change from moment to moment and day to day. Stop by the library and pick up a book or two to read on the beach and a movie to watch if the weather is awful and you need to stay inside. Copies of this summer’s Borderland Read title Cracker by Cynthia Kadohata are still available for check out. The library has lots of choices for reading and watching. Here are a few of the new titles we have available for your reading pleasure.

Summer reading in full swing

“Look What’s Cookin’ at Your Library!” If you haven’t been to the library and the junior room in particular, stop in and see what we have cooking for you and your children this summer. Summer reading is in full swing, but it isn’t too late to join the fun. Pick up a summer reading bag in the junior room of the library and get your schedule of events.
Stories in the Park continue on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. at the east end of Smokey Bear Park. Join us for about 30 minutes of stories, games, music and general silliness. Concerts in the Park follow at 7 in the bandshell.

Library staff Cook Up a Celebration

Thursday, June 12, is the first day of summer reading programming. Join library staff as they “Cook Up a Celebration” at 1 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room. We will be playing with food as we celebrate summertime and the state’s 150th birthday. Thursday, June 19, at 1 p.m., youth ages 6 and above can join the library staff as we “Eat Our Words.” Come have fun playing with words and language, including creating a picture or object representing a word with prizes for cool designs.

Summer reading is underway

June is here, school is out, the lilacs may bloom before the end of June and this weekend I’m planting my tomatoes outside. It must be summer. That means summer reading is underway. Look What’s Cookin’ at Your Library and be sure to swing into the library and pick up a bag full of activities and information about summer reading for any child interested in participating. The first program will be Wednesday, June 11, at Smokey Bear Park at 6 p.m. Come hear stories, play games and engage in general silliness as we party through the summer.
