Journal Staff Report
International Falls graduate J. Michael Taschuk, New Brighton, reeled in a monster muskie on Aug. 23 near their cabin in Ontario’s Red Gut Bay on Rainy Lake. He, his wife Christine and their grandson Javon were fishing for walleye using a floating jig and night crawler combination.
“A smallmouth bass hit the crawler and when reeling in I could feel the weight change and eventually the smallmouth came to the top followed by this monster muskie that leaped out of the water,” noted Taschuk. “At the top, the muskie made a decision it wanted the smallmouth, and the fight began and went on for approximately 15 minutes before we could net/boat the fish.”
The muskie measured 58 inches, and according to online charts, the weight of the muskie was 55 pounds.
