Gilbert Carlson, 85, veteran resort operator on Rainy Lake, died early today at Falls Nursing Home where he had been a patient since Sept. 7.
Mabel Mears and Jean Rousseau are the newest members of the Senior Citizens Club. Members under 50 may participate in activities but can not attend business meetings.
Vern LaFave of Portland, Ore., has been here visiting his mother, Mrs. Eva LaFave, his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Orin Tollefsrud and his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Savard.
Homecoming queen and king candidates from the junior class are Sherren Crandall, Jill Pavleck, Arlene Craig, Judy Anderson, Lorie Davis, Renee Richter, Ted Bilben, Ron Ginter, Tom Hodel, Sam McLinn, Mike Lucca and Dick LaFond.

Pope Pius XII will return in death Friday to his native Rome, to lie in state at the Vatican and be buried in St. Peter’s Basilica. His death early today, though anticipated for hours, sent a wave of shock around the world.
Miss Laurie Pleimling and Miss Jaynice Hafdahl will leave Friday evening for Moorhead where they will attend Homecoming festivities at Concordia College over the weekend.
Donna Norman, 7, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Norman, Island View Route, submitted to surgery recently at the University of Minnesota Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Youso, Henry and Mary Frances plan to leave early Saturday morning to drive to Moorhead where they will be guests of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Youso, and son, Steven.
60 YEARS AGO
Henrietta Senti, Littlefork fourth-grade teacher, submitted to surgery on Tuesday. Mrs. Norris Procunier of International Falls, who taught first grade in Littlefork last year, is substituting for Ms. Senti, while she is ill.
The plumber’s license held by A.J. Scott was suspended “for cause” by the city council at an adjourned meeting last night.
Fluffy, delicious pancakes, meat patties and scalding hot coffee are again in prospect for patrons of the fourth annual Forest Festival. The traditional lumberjack fare will be served by the Philosophers Club and head man in the kitchen will be Floyd Hausmann, who is an artist at turning out cakes.
Ten young classmates helped Judy Blanchard celebrate her birthday at a party Friday night. Prize winners were Lucille Covel, Marlys Trach, Juel Morff, Alice Krokum and Ardith Holmstrom.
