History was made when 13 area women became the first class from Rainy River Community College to receive their elementary education degrees from Bemidji State University. Students included Tamara Bowman, Jill Bruyere, Dawn Forsythe, Ramona Johnson, Catherine Kroeten, Harmony Lennox, LeeAnn Meer, Susan Moriarity, Mary Hogan, Charlotte Porter, Carla Harris, Kelli Seaward and Carmen Williamson.
Amy Pullar, daughter of Jean Pullar, participated in a six-week program about science in local commerce at The College of St. Scholastica.

Martha Rischar and Jill Bartkowski were among 194 students from the North Dakota State School of Science, Wahpeton, to participate in the 10th annual Josten’s American Yearbook Camp at the NDSSS campus.
David Smith, former pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church in South International Falls, has been called as president by the Oak Hills Fellowship in Bemidji.
40 YEARS AGO
Mr. and Mrs. W.A. DeRosier of Las Vegas, Nev., visited friends here recently. The DeRosiers made their home here for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. John Harris and family spent the weekend at Thief River Falls with their daughter and family.

The Couple’s Club of Zion Lutheran Church is planning a luau at Alstrom’s lake cabin Sunday. The fun starts at 3 p.m. and the dinner will be served at 5 p.m., so bring out the muumuus for the women and the loud shirts for the men, and don’t forget your swim suit.

Honored Queen Susan Tonn, and past honored queen, Karin Mether, and their escorts will lead the grand march at the Jobs Daughters summer ball Friday at the Falls Country Club. Irving Peterson and his orchestra will play for dancing from 8:30 p.m. to 12 midnight.
Mrs. Jack Johnson is the winner of the sweepstakes award at the Rainy Lake Horticultural Show. She accumulated 19 points to become the owner of a Cambridge Crystal epergne, donated by Mrs. Claude Whitney, long-time member of the horticultural society.
Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Granger, Kelley Apartments, arrived home after a two-week vacation in Michigan. They viewed the new bridge recently completed across the straits of Mackinac.
Falls Memorial Hospital board voted to increase room rates $1 a day for all types of service. Private rooms will now be $20 a day and semi-private $16.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Brunette, Liberty Addition.
Thomas Vicari, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Vicari, Vets Village, will be two years old tomorrow. His mother entertained at a pre-birthday party Saturday afternoon for three of his small friends and their mothers. The small guests were Diane Hams, Joan Nelson and Diane Haglund.
A reunion of the Pelland family will be staged Wednesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.R. Parker, 1010 Eighth St. It will be the first time in 15 years that all members of the family are together.
Funeral services for 20-year-old Stanley Soboleski, Mando employee who lost his life in a tank mishap in the Sulphite plant late Saturday, will be conducted at 9 a.m. Wednesday in St. Thomas Church.
