Concerned about source of fish

Filed under:

No votes yet

To the editor,
We would like to voice our concern about Koochiching Economic Development Authority providing assistance to the fish plant located in the international falls business park.
In 2007 our family sold a building and land in the business park. We were told by the building purchaser about the proposed fish plant and that the fish processed at that plant would be coming from Winnipeg and not from Rainy Lake or this area.
A recent article in The Daily Journal indicated that fish will be harvested from Rainy Lake provided by first nation band members. With the rising cost of fuel, we are concerned that the fish for the plant would have to come from the closest place possible for the plant to be profitable.
We feel strongly against our county providing any kind of assistance to the fish company unless there is a guarantee that the fish for the plant come from elsewhere.
The Rainy Lake Sport Fishing Club and others have worked too hard providing our local residents and tourists an excellent fishery in Rainy Lake. If the fish population in Rainy Lake suffers, so will our tourism industry with a snowballing effect on our entire local economy.
The fish plant is an agenda item at the next KEDA Board meeting to be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. in the Koochiching County board room. We encourage all those interested in the future of Rainy Lake to attend the meeting.

I see that Sportsman Service also sells fresh walleye. Does anyone know where they get it?

When I bought walleye from Sportsmans Service last summer, it had just been brought in from up in Canada, by the "Native Canadians"! So, I don't think walleye from the north end of Rainy Lake, will affect the Falls area. Just cooked some of the walleye last weekend, and the boys down here in Dixie love it.

I also agree with everything you have stated but I don't think this company has really sold much fish, if any. My feelings are that it really isn't much of a business and more of a scam. It has a shell of a building with the roofing blowing off and one employee. I have never been able to buy fish there and a u-haul was there the last time I stopped. I wouldn't be surprised to see it in foreclosure in the near future and the city with a couple more empty buildings.

To the jerk who wrote the last comment to Kay, it is obvious that you have a biased opinion of the "Fish House". It's people like you, who "hi-jack" these websites and make up a user name like you did, [just to give Kay the middle finger], are the one(s) who make it hard for us to have a decent discussion on here! You obviously are not mature enough to argue your opposite opinion towards Kay. I have faith that once the DJ web masters see your disgusting piece of work they will pull it AND your user access. Have a good day, "somewhere else"!!

WOW I must of hit the nail on the head. If you got a tour it was of one empty building with no doors and an office and then there are some trailers. I am all for business but I am not for getting money and not using it for what it was intended. This is not an operating business and you would have to be blind to think it is. You can get nasty but it doesn't say much for you. Have a good day!!!!!!!!!

Roj and Kay, the responder may have gotten a bit testy, nasty even, but the author is right that there is some business going on there. It does have about a million dollars of eq. in the building and is looking to start. And yes it looks in rough shape but is a construction in process and when that stops the city may consider blight conditions. It is interesting that the family who started this letter to the editor, origially owned the building, sold it to this Barney guy who ran out of money and now the main investors are scrabbling a bit. The original family who owned it have to admit they knew what this business entailed. KEDA(county and city) has never invested into this other than allow development on the property that it still owns. So hopefully, this business succeeds, gets its fish from the northern first nation tribes who fish the English and French river systems, don't hit Rainy at all and hires people. Again, the land that this huge building stands on is still the county's and city's, keeping the tax payer safe in its investment in case it does completely fail. Sportman's gets their fish from the northen markets like Winnipeg and possibly from the Red Lake First Nations and it is expected that this out fit will buy fish from these same tribes and sell to the rough fish world market. Maybe someday, something will break for the town.

Doorsman,

Good to hear from ya!! Boy did you ever open a big "loophole" for people in I-Falls, when you used the term "construction in progress", in an attempt to cover up the horrible site this "fish house" has made! So when the City Officials try to tell a resident their garage needs to come down, or the shed in the back yard is unsightly, they just have to say, "wait a minute, that building is under construction", right?? City Officials should tell these developers to either "****** or get off the pot", unless some city officials have a stake in this business. Huh? I mean what is so hard, in trying to get the "Native Canadians" [Indians] to catch some walleye and bring them to the business and process them? Sportsman Service has it down to a science! Doesn't sound like rocket science to me! And I really don't think that the Indians will go all the way to Winnepeg to catch Walleye. I would be willing to bet that the walleye the Indians sell to the American side, are caught much closer to the Falls than you want us to believe. In fact last summer I bought some walleye [at Sportsmans] that had just been brought in from Canada, and I talked with the Natives that brought them, and they told me exactly where they caught them. Which was not that far from the Falls. But, I fried some up last weekend, and the Rebels down here loved them. Yes, maybe someday, something "will break" for the Falls. But, I doubt a fish plant will be the tipping point!! Well, I've got to run, it's my B-day, and I have to eat some cake, before Ms Obama comes on TV and ruins my special day. I am almost as old as TLJ, but not quite!!

Back at ya Roj. I know that...

Back to page top

Back at ya Roj. I know that no official has a steak, ha ha, in this enterprise. As far as blight, the city attempts to work with people before seeking action. Even your conspiracy based mind won't convince me that the city allows loopholes, you don't have too, I know you have a come back on that one. As far as telling this business interest to "get off the pot", the kind you sit on right, that is being done according to sources, but there is a glimmer of hope here because some of these owners are real players, they just need to get that world market nailed. As far as Sportsman's fish, they are caught north of here, are probably purchased from the Winnipeg market, I know the only non rough fish quota fisherman(native) on Rainy and if there are sport fish that are allowed in his quota, I can't say where they go. Sportsman's also probably gets fish from, as stated before, Red Lake. I wonder, how do grits and walleye go to together? I did read TJ's comment about Biden, he is right, you and I did say that Biden would be a good choice for the big job, but I would rather see McCain/Biden or McCain/Lieberman but that is not going to happen. Happy birthday, and E-mail me one day how Missy is doing.

Doorsman,

Don't matter where the Socialist Indians from Canada got these walleye's in my freezer, but they are delicious! Walleye and stone ground grits, with some cheese sprinkled over it. Now there's something "almost" better than sex!! Showing my age there! By the way, who's Missy??

Your niece, and cheese on the grits is a nice touch. I am just battering up a batch of deep-fried beer walleyes as I type this out. Oh, again, Missy is your niece, same as mine.

Doorsman,

Maybe your older Bro, could let you know what his daughter is up to. You see I don't communicate with that crowd in the Sunshine state anymore!! I can smell the "beer in the batter" all the way down south of the MD line!! Enjoy!!!! I'm headed to Tennessee this weekend, they have some good walleye fishing around Knoxville by the way.

What I don't get is how the DJ has let the blog stay in when they so blatantly broke one of their oh so great fair rules. Even a fifth grader would know what they were saying in responding to Kay. Also where is the mayor who was always Johnny on the spot to accept cuddos and respond but when dealing with an issue that might have some negative feed we get no response?
