Fifth annual Corn and Brat Feed planned

Elk’s Lodge #1599 Report

The phrase “Elk’s Care Elk’s Share” is applicable to the International Falls Elk’s Lodge #1599 when it comes to youth activities.
The local Elk’s lodge is there to serve the youth of the area, whether its the Elk’s Youth Camp, Falls High prom or scholarships and award recognitions.
The International Falls lodge received at the state convention in Rochester the “First Place in Youth Activities” award for lodges with 300-600 members.
The Falls lodge is hosting its fifth annual “Corn and Brat Feed” to sponsor local scholarships. The feed is scheduled for 3-7 p.m. Friday and features all-you-can-eat corn, a burger or a brat, and a beverage for $6. The feed is open to the public and the Elk’s encourages families to attend. Proceeds from the feed go directly to the local scholarship fund.
The feed is spearheaded by Past Exalted Ruler Judy Thompson and requires the help of many volunteers from the lodge to set up, cook, serve and clean up.
Seniors from Falls High School and the surrounding area were awarded $4,000 in scholarships in April. The 2008 scholarship recipients were Kate Anderson, Katie Anderson, Josef Carlson, Ariel Lagen, Kirsten Landmark, Christine Lucachick, Lucy Nevanen and Kaitlyn Pelowski.
In the spring 2008, 500 scholarships, ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year were awarded.
The Legacy Award is a one-year merit based scholarship for children, stepchildren, grandchildren or step-grandchilden of Elks who are members of good standing. The national committee in Chicago judged these applications. Of the six state Legacy scholarship winners, Falls students Katie Anderson, Brock Krahnke-LeMieux and Kaitlyn Pelowski were named three of the six state Legacy awardees for 2008.
The Falls Lodge also participates in scholarship programs through the Elk’s National Foundation. The foundation provides more than $3.64 million in college scholarship each year.
The Most Valuable Student scholarship is open to all seniors who are expecting to seek a four-year degree. Application forms for the scholarship are expected to be available in area high schools, including Littlefork and Indus, in September.
The applications are expected to be judged on academic achievement, leadership and community services, and financial need. The local Elk’s lodge scholarship committee will score the applications and winners are expected to be forwarded to the North District Scholarship Committee. As a result of the chair of that committee being a member of the International Falls Lodge #1599, the North District Scholarship Chair is expected to meet in International Falls to judge the local winners from Bemidji, Duluth, Eveleth, Hibbing, International Falls, Thief River Falls and Virginia. Winners are expected to be sent on to the state and national levels for judging.
Information about these scholarships, as well as Emergency Educational Grants available to children of deceased or disabled Elk’s, can be found at the Elk’s Lodge #1599.
