Fisheries not taking fish from Rainy Lake

Fish processed at Can-Am Fisheries is not coming from Rainy Lake, with the exception one load that has come from an Ontario commercial fisherman.
Koochiching Economic Development Authority Board members said Wednesday that they were concerned about fish being taken out of Rainy Lake. They also clarified that they never said that no fish would be taken out of the lake.
Rainy Lake commercial netter Blaine Tucker of Ontario has sold one load of fish to the company, according to DeNucci.


Students enjoy RRCC summer work programs

The Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training’s summer youth employment program is drawing to a close. The office reports the season is ending on a positive note with a number of success stories.
Zachary Wood, a 16 year-old International Falls teen, worked his summer at the Rainy River Community College. It was a convenient location for a youth with limited mobility. His mother, Tammy, works in the same building, as does his career counselor, Carol Stegmeir, at the WorkForce Center located in RRCC.


David Cronin named new TruStar CFO

TruStar Federal Credit Union announced Aug. 18 that David Cronin was appointed chief financial officer, a senior management team leadership position that oversees asset and liability management, investment, financial analysis, accounting and reporting functions for all branches.
Cronin will oversee $118 million in assets of TruStar’s 11,250 members in International Falls, Big Falls, Park Rapids, and Menahga credit unions and surrounding community branch locations.


A band is about music and business, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

An experienced guitarist and a budding vocalist have formed Audio Omen, a classic rock band that writes and records original material. The International Falls duo note that to be a full-time Borderland band means that they cannot survive on club gigs alone.
Audio Omen was founded by Joe Tilander, a lifelong guitarist who works as a technician for The Computer Fix in International Falls. He also applies his technology background to his music and made the additional investment of building his own home recording studio.


Curves holds seventh anniversary open house

Becky Olson, owner of Curves in International Falls, celebrated the seventh anniversary of her women’s aerobic and strength training workout center with an open house this weekend.
The event was to thank customers for helping realize the goal of creating a fun, supportive environment for women’s health.
With more than 10,000 locations in dozens of countries, Curves is the world’s largest fitness franchise. The company’s 30 minute Curves workout is said to work every major muscle group with strength training, cardio and stretching.


School board, Ranier City Council to meet Monday

Falls School Board
The Falls School Board is scheduled to hear reports on the results of the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment II tests during its meeting at 5 p.m. Monday in the Falls High School cafeteria.
The Falls school district met student performance goals dictated by the federal No Child Left Behind law. FHS Principal Tim Everson and Falls Elementary Principal Jerry Hilfer are expected to discuss the results during the administrative reports.

Gordon Winzenburg joined Border State Bank of International Falls as the commercial banking officer on Aug. 1 "Gordy" brings over 20 years of banking experience, specializing in serving small businesses Border State Bank. He served for 17 years on the Small Business Administration’s State Advisory Committee and 18 years on the SBA 504 Board with Minnesota Business Finance, Inc. He also ran a private business consulting practice for the past eight years.

Neutrino detector going ahead, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

The construction and operation of a neutrino detector laboratory at Ash River has received congressional development funding and is expected to start construction later this year.
The project may play a role in better understanding Dark Matter in the Universe.
Project NOvA is part of the new neutrino physics research program with a “Far Detector” at Ash River in addition to a “Near Detector” at the main neutrino injector facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill.


Thrifty White Drug closes, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

Prescription records sent to Kmart

Thrifty White Drug Store of International Falls closed its pharmacy Tuesday and the store will remain open to sell its non-prescription inventory.
Kirsten Whipple, Kmart spokesperson, said the Kmart Pharmacy has acquired Thrifty’s customer pharmaceutical records. She described the sale as a “mutually beneficial opportunity.”
Whipple noted that sales of this nature are not generally made known to the public before they occur, and that the records typically transfer at the same time, and according to State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
