KEDA Is A Total Mess
July 17, 2008 - 4:13pm — kay
If the KEDA was located in another country they maybe would have an excuse for not checking on the progress of the fish company. When the new fisheries started with the support of this organization the fish were supposed to come from the Thunderbay area. I agree with the Wagners on the change of plans which now gives the location of the fish supply to be Rainy Lake. This organization has not followed up on the progress of this company at all. They must not have been to the plant or they would have discovered that there were only a couple of employees, the buildings were not completed, and fish was not being processed. There is no excuse at all . Someone should be visiting the sites. Now all of a sudden they realize the company is not following the guidelines to be in a tax free zone. Poor management to say the least. Before when KEDA was in trouble they could blame it on someone else, who is to blame this time!!!!!!!!!!! The County is right to with hold funds. If the KEDA is to be involved in the FTZ zone there had better be a total revamp of the organization or it will end up just like the fish plant.

Its not a "total" mess....
Back to page topIts not a "total" mess. KEDA spends money on meetings at the Holiday Inn, spends money on lawyers, spends money on their saleries and I even hear you can borrow a few dollars and deposit it in your local bank account. Thats all called "economic development" and thats what KEDA does. Its "JUST" public money so that doesn't count for responsible actions and decisions on their part. If it was their money, I suppose a different course of action would be followed, but its not, its just public money.
KEDA Director Paul Nevanen...
Back to page topKEDA Director Paul Nevanen encourages anyone that wants more information about the plant and its status to contact him by calling 283-8585 or to stop by the KEDA Office at 405 Third St., accessed by the alley between the Post Office and Wells Fargo.
NOTE: I am not being cynical...
Back to page topNOTE: I am not being cynical or sarcastic here, I am asking a serious question:
Does anyone know when the last time a KEDA action actually led to economic development that outweighed the cost of the investment?
The only one that comes to...
Back to page topThe only one that comes to mind is Northland Distributing. They seemed to be doing well until it was discovered they were in a wet land area. Then I believe KEDA gave them funds to purchase alternate wet land. The company at one time thought about moving out of town but stayed after KEDA helped them out. The tax free zone where the fish building is being built is also in a wet land area. I really don't know what else they have accomplished. Maybe the Journal could publish a list.
Paul Nevanen's assistance...
Back to page topPaul Nevanen's assistance played a role in getting our business from a plan on paper in 2005 to a small business which is currently breaking even. (The average start-up business takes about 5 years to get in the black.) We received no monies from KEDA, however the information and advice given by Paul is part of the reason that for our success so far. And we have created 3 full-time jobs with the average wage of $13/hr.
Knowing first-hand what an asset KEDA is to local small business owners, my opinion is that KEDA is a benefit to our community and worth my tax money. However, reading about that financial mangement at KEDA in the Daily Journal, I do wish that it would be a little more responsible with the money.
