Does Blight Apply To Empty Trailer Houses?
June 4, 2008 - 9:04am — kay
I was visiting in one of the local trailer parks and noticed several trailers that are not only empty but have the windows broken out and are totally abandoned. It really looks like a fire hazard. The windows maybe should be boarded up at least. Where can people dispose of items such as trailers? Are these areas places that the fire chief checks for blight? Does anyone know who is in charge of areas such as city beach or county road 20?

Someone should go through...
Back to page topSomeone should go through those areas and request that they be removed. Not only do they look bad, but they could be allowing the wrong kind of activity to go on inside of these empty houses.
I would just like to know when they are going to fix fifth street - what the heck - it is June already. I guess we have to wait for the freeze again to get rid of the mud and potholes on that street.
Shouldn't that be considered blight? Muddy streets full of a gazillion potholes, weeds growing like hotcakes where the grass used to be? Looks like caca to me - so I would consider it blight.
Thanks for the questions....
Back to page topThanks for the questions. Empty and/or abandoned trailer homes (or any homes) with windows knocked out are not acceptable, and contribute to blight and safety issues. Our Fire Chief (and support staff) does a great job of attempting to determine blight locations. Please...do not hesitate to call the Fire Department at 283-2929 to bring something to our attention. We may be currently in the process of already addressing the specific location, or we may need to add it to the list. We are making progress on our blight campaign; however, we understand more work needs to be done.
Regarding fifth street - the project is budgeted and scheduled to be fixed early this summer season. Thank you for your patience.
I hope I have answered your questions. Have an enjoyable evening.

Mayor Shawn Mason

Back to page topOk - early this summer has come and gone and there is still no work done on fifth street. Is there a timeline that you can update Mayor Mason? Is the city charging those people on fifth street a special assessment for this unfinished project?
Thank you.
Steve Johnson, Falls street...
Back to page topSteve Johnson, Falls street commissioner, said today that the bid on the Fifth Street project has been awarded to Bowman Construction Co. Last week, Bowman representatives said they anticipated moving equipment onto the project during the week of July 28. However, the start date for Fifth Street is based on completion of another project that Bowman is now working on, said Johnson.
Also, Johnson said there are no special assessments to residents for the project.

Back to page topThank you Mayor Mason. The number of abandoned trailers in this park is amazing. It would be impossible to not notice these since you can see them from Hwy 11. Is there someone that will haul items like this away for scrap? Jerry has probably already addressed this problem but since school is now out it seems like the ideal place for kids to hang out. Maybe the windows could be boarded over.

Back to page topIs there anything that can be done to tidy up the area around the old Holiday gas station site on hwy 53? It can't be called blight but it is not very impressive looking!

Back to page topThis is an area that really needs a fence around it. I would think it would not only be a blight issue but a safety one. The piles sometimes seem to not be to safe. I think for insurance purposes it would be a good idea to fence it in.

Back to page topThank you, everyone, for your questions and input. I just met this morning with Fire Chief Jerry Jensen on this isse. The blight team is working hard to address the issues. I'll post more information as it is provided to me.

Back to page topThere is another vacated trailer behind Sound North in the trailer park. The city should fine the owner. If this caught fire several trailers would be in danger. Again no windows so anyone could enter. It also makes a nice home for stray cats and other critters.
You would think the owner of the property would want to get rid of it so they could rent the space to someone else.

Back to page topGood Job to whoever owns the trailer court behind Sound North. Almost all of the abandoned trailers have been removed. I can't say that for the one along the river. Since this is a fire hazard it should be top priority. It has been a hard summer to keep your lawns mowed but it seems everyone is doing the best they can. Good job!!

Back to page topI find it ironic that a car would be towed away because it doesn't have current plates but numerous empty trailers with broken windows etc can stay. To my way of thinking they would be more of a blight issue than any car without current plates or long grass.
