Meltdown of Dollar as China Dumps U.S. Currency

Comments by China that it intends to move away from its reliance on the dollar triggered a sharp drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and heightened worldwide fears about the U.S. currency's stability. Chinese Central Bank Vice Director Xiu Jian said that his country is planning to shift much of its $1.4 trillion national currency reserve from dollars to more stable currencies, such as the euro or Canadian dollar. After these comments, the dollar fell to record lows relative to other currencies -- the lowest ever against the euro, the lowest in a generation against the British pound, and the lowest in 57 years against the Canadian dollar.

"The big issue on any currency is if its rate of depreciation is so fast that it scares away all capital, and the announcement that we heard from China sort of feeds those fears," said Larry Smith, chief investment officer at Third Wave Global Investors.

China is the world's largest investor in U.S. Treasury bonds and securities, holding more U.S. debt than any country but Japan. Because China's currency is linked to the dollar, the country also maintains a massive reserve of the currency.

But this policy had already begun to shift at the time of Xiu's comments. China has divested approximately 5 percent of its $400 billion holdings in the U.S. Treasury and established a $200 billion fund to help diversify its investments in equities and stocks around the world.

"We will favor stronger currencies over weaker ones, and will readjust accordingly," said Cheng Siwei, vice chairman of China's National People's Congress.

It is not just U.S. investors who are concerned. Because the dollar's fluctuations have driven up the euro, exports in Europe have fallen and sparked fears for the stability of that continent's economy. In a recent speech, French president Nicolas Sarkozy added his voice to those calling for the Bush administration to act to stabilize the currency.

"The dollar cannot remain 'someone else's problem,' " Sarkozy said. "If we are not careful, monetary disarray could morph into economic war. We would all be its victims."

The value of our money...

Back to page top

The value of our money falling as fast as a thermometer in January. Millions without health insurance. Unemployment rising everyday along with the sun. Gas prices we never thought we would see. Food prices sky rocketing. The national mortgage crisis with home values sliding down a slippery slope to who knows where.

All this while our government seems to be as confused as me when it comes to what to do. If not a depression, what is it?

Remember this tune? Called the "Eve of Destruction"? Is it upon us now? Nationwide talk on it, telling us to stock up on groceries now before the food and gas riots are upon us. Government fenced in compounds recently built sitting empty around our country, what are they for? Is this country being fitted for the wooden suit? I pray not, but man it can't get much worse before things fall down and then apart!

I feel like if I turn the other cheek today, it will just get hit too!

God Bless This Country! (We need it!)

With the economic problems,...

Back to page top

With the economic problems, the devaluation of the U.S. currency, can the disasters of the book of Revelation be far from happening? When the genius who finds a way to stabilize the world's economies, and wars rises look out because that will be the end. And the real puzzler is that everyone will give this man power, because of his charisma, and intelligence. Then he will betray everyone, and declare war on Israel, and the world's religions, murdering those who refuse to appoint him god. Remember that this was placed here when it happens, that you were informed before it happened, and that there was no surprise to any of you reading this.

You know, I wish the book of revelations was more specific about when this stuff with the Antichrist is coming. I mean, people have been saying the Dark Lord of charm and pleasantries was going to erupt on the world stage after 9/11, with Y2K, the Bible Code, Bankruptcy 1995, Waco, Oklahoma City, Bill Clinton's election, Bush the Elder's declaration of the need for a New World Order, Israel in the last 60+ years, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, nuclear weapons, WWII and Hitler, The Great War, the harnessing of electric power, the Industrial Revolution . . . and on and on, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

In 999 AD the Christian world spent impossible, sleepless nights praying for the world's continued existence. And you know what? In 1000 AD they woke up, realized nothing happened, and went back to work.

The tabloids in the checkout lines wouldn't make money unless they had an end-times prophecy a few times a year. There is thoughtless end-times paranoia everywhere, at all times, throughout time.

If I was helping run the New World Order, I would use that fear and that willing, doe-eyed stupidity to my advantage for conquering populations. I'm sure someone is out there running programs on simple people whose psychological extension of personal death onto the world is captured, reformed, and guided into a force for geopolitical gain.

Ben Stein beating the creationist drum in Expelled is a fairly blatant example [cough, cough, nudge]. I mean, seriously. Come on.

It's all around you if you wake up, but you're not going to, so you will be conquered. Maybe you should be.

Thanks for the clip, all though it is disheartening. This guy had to leave Washington in order for his truth to be heard while our elected officials continue to pass more spending. I'm starting to feel like a Lemming, I can almost see the edge of the cliff now.

This country is dieing for something to live for.

With the knowledge of the things that are taking place today, especially in real estate, does anyone really believe this developer is going to stick his neck on the chopping block by investing hundreds of thousands of dollars or more on a waterfront project? I'll be surprised if we ever see those long lines to Canada anytime soon. With gas prices rising and the dollar falling against the Canadian dollar I just don't see tourist's jumping in their cars to head to a country where they will now get less for more. You can take me to task for saying it, but the way things are headed if this project gets built (which I doubt) it will just end up as another International Mall. Timing is everything, and this just ain't the time.
